Iran, EU ministers to discuss nuclear deal
The foreign ministers of Germany, France and Britain, along with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, will later this week meet Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the EU says.
The 2015 Iran nuclear deal will be the official topic of the meeting scheduled to be held in Brussels on Thursday, however the participants are also expected to raise the wave of unrest that has gripped Iran since the end of last year.
The meeting comes as critics accuse the EU of failing to quickly and unequivocally condemn the Iranian government's response to the demonstrations, in an apparent bid to avoid undermining the nuclear deal.Future Saudi king tightens grip on power
Eighteen protesters have died in violence linked to the protests, with as many as 1000 to 1800 people thought to have been detained during the demonstrations.
In contrast to the US, which wants to renegotiate the nuclear deal, the EU is pushing for continued implementation of the agreement, which aims to prevent Iran from constructing nuclear weapons in return for the lifting of sanctions.
